SUMMARY:Youth Drum and Wicaglata Class
DESCRIPTION:This is a 4-week drum and singing class for youth. Food and drinks are provided for participants. \nClass dates: \n\nMarch 10th\nMarch 17th\nMarch 24th\nMarch 31st\n\nHonoring the Drum. Strengthening Our Youth. Supporting traditional Resilience.\nThe drum is the heartbeat of our people and a foundational source of traditional strength. It connects our youth to their ancestors\, language\, and Lakota identity. Through engagement in traditional drumming and singing\, young people build not only musical skill but also social\, emotional\, and value-based wellness. \nWíčaglata provides a safe\, culturally grounded space where youth can participate in positive\, strengths-based activities that promote resilience\, belonging\, and self-confidence. Guided by Lakota value-based teachings\, participants will gain skills that support lifelong wellbeing and healthy decision-making.\nThrough this program\, youth will learn: \n• Respect for the drum as a living Relative and heritage resource\n• Lakota songs\, their histories\, and their traditional significance\n• Core Lakota values\, including humility\, generosity\, respect\, and courage\n• The importance of kinship\, community connection\, and collective responsibility\n• traditional identity as a protective factor that supports mental\, emotional\, and spiritual well-being\n• How traditional\, belonging\, and positive peer relationships help prevent substance misuse\, including opioid misuse and overdose \nOur youth are the next generation of drum keepers and traditional carriers. By investing in them today with tailored\, prevention-focused support\, we help ensure the strength of our traditions\, the health of our communities\, and the well-being of future generations. \nAt the end of the four weeks\, participants will have the opportunity to make their own drum. \nContact the Great Plains Tribal Opioid Response program for questions.
