The Meskwaki Nation is the only federally recognized tribe in the state of Iowa, maintaining the Meskwaki Settlement in Tama County. The Nation is known for its strong governance structure, including its own police force, court system, and constitutional framework. The community has worked consistently to preserve sovereignty and maintain direct control over internal affairs, cultural continuity, and economic development.
The Meskwaki people are descendants of the historic Sac and Fox tribes, with a rich heritage expressed through traditional language, arts, and cultural programs. Their identity is rooted in Algonquian-speaking traditions, and they continue to integrate ancient knowledge with modern community initiatives. The Nation actively supports cultural preservation through a museum, cultural center, and education programs.
Economically, the tribe operates a variety of enterprises ranging from gaming and hospitality to fuel, manufacturing, food production, and professional services. Health, youth services, and wellness programs are central pillars of daily life within the Settlement. The Meskwaki Nation continues to expand services that strengthen community well-being, cultural pride, and economic resilience.
