Located in northeast Nebraska, the Santee Sioux Nation is part of the Dakota people and maintains a homeland overlooking the Missouri River. The tribe has a strong connection to its historic roots, tracing back to communities relocated following the U.S.–Dakota War of 1862. This history influences modern identity, governance, and cultural renewal.
The Nation operates programs supporting community health, youth development, housing, and elder services. Schools and tribal education partnerships promote Dakota language, cultural teachings, and academic readiness. The Santee Health & Wellness Center serves as a central medical resource for the community, offering primary care, prevention, and behavioral health services.
Economic development includes tribally owned convenience stores, ranching operations, tourism programs, and the Ohiya Casino & Resort: the oldest tribal casino in Nebraska. Cultural preservation, environmental stewardship, and community investment continue to guide tribal priorities.
